"Like many autistic people, I suffer from disordered sleep, particularly an inability to quickly switch my brain off – and as such I had a deep personal connection to the Wordless Lullabies for the Sleepless project, and wrote based on the concept of what I would want to listen to in my own sleepless moments. That involves sounds that are soft, pleasant, and not piercing – but because my mind is racing through those times, there’s a tricky balance between being 'interesting enough to not be aggravatingly dull but not so much as to be a distraction that reinforces wakefulness. As such, a gentle slow waltz pattern repeats through the piece – the rhythm unchanged, the notes and phonemes constantly shifting, the tessitura tumbling downwards towards the end as if to denote 'sinking' into sleep.

Much of the piece was written on the sleepless night of 3-4 June 2017, amidst the sound of all-night trains carrying fans from the UEFA Champions League final. Its title is a pun, referring to the key signature of Eb minor."

David Howell (b. 1986) is a British writer of vocal melodies and accompanying text. Guided by the distinct perspective of his autistic perception, he aims to make creative and respectful use of individual voices; this ethos has inspired collaborations with singers including Ann Moss, Elizabeth van Os, and Stephanie Lamprea. Further collaborations, including a co-writing partnership with Aiden Feltkamp, are in progress as of January 2023.
